Sedition case against Priya Saha dismissed

Hours after filing of a sedition case against Priya Biswas Saha for her comments “against the state” during a meeting with the US President Donald Trump, a Dhaka court dismissed it today.

Earlier in the day, Barrister Syedul Haque Suman filed the sedition case with the court.

Details of the dismissal order could not be known immediately.

It is a mandatory provision to take home ministry’s approval for filing a sedition case.

On July 18, Priya, one of the organising secretaries of Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad, told the US president that 37 million Hindu, Buddhist and Christian people have disappeared from Bangladesh.

The statement was captured on a video and went viral on social media platforms.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziaur Rahman recorded the statement of Barrister Suman and said he will pass an order on the issue later in the day.

In his complaint, Barrister Suman also appealed to the court for issuing an arrest warrant against her and said her comments on Bangladesh are all false, fabricated and baseless which are tantamount to sedition.

WHERE DID SHE MEET WITH DONALD TRUMP?

Priya Saha, a Bangladeshi national, participated in the Second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom held at the US Department of State in Washington, DC on July 16-18.

In a video captured at the programme, Priya Saha was seen telling US President Donald Trump, among other things, that “37 million Hindu, Buddhist and Christian people have been disappeared from Bangladesh”.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen also attended the meeting.

Delegates from 106 countries, including about 40 Foreign Ministers, took part in the meeting at the invitation of Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State.

5 more sedition cases filed

More five separate sedition cases have been filed today against Priya Biswas Saha.

The cases were filed in Dhaka, Brahmanbaria, Natore and Sylhet,

DHAKA

Two separate sedition cases were filed against Priya Saha by Barrister Syedul Haque Suman and Advocate Md Ibrahim Khalil.

Barrister Suman filed the sedition case with a Dhaka Court today which was dismissed by the court after a few hours.

Details of the dismissal order could not be known immediately.

On the other hand, Advocate Md Ibrahim Khalil filed another case against her with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Dhaka bringing allegation that her comments are false, fabricated and treasonous.

BRAHMANBARIA

Md Asad Ullah, director of Riajul Ulum Madrasha in Brahmanbaria, has filed a case with Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court against Saha, our local correspondent reports quoting Osman Gani, president of Brahmanbaria District Lawyers Association.

NATORE

Nasim Uddin Nasim, local correspondent of The Bangladesh Protidin and Channel 24, has filed a case against Priya Biswas Saha, her husband Moloy Kumar Saha and their two daughters with Natore Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, our correspondent reports quoting Advocate Alek Shaikh.

Advocate Alek Shaikh held the hearing of the case and asked officer-in-charge of Natore Sadar Police Station to submit a report on August 6, he said.

SYLHET

Sarwar Mahmud, a former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Sylhet Metropolitan unit, and Rimad Ahmed Rubel, a Jubo League convening committee member, filed two separate cases against Priya Saha with Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court for presenting false and fabricated information to US President Donald Trump, our Sylhet correspondent reports quoting Advocate Md Tajuddin.
